The project on Integrated Crop Management (ICM), Postharvest Quality Management (PQM) and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) Adoption for Mango in Region I (La Union) was conducted with the funding from the Department of Science and Technology, the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquaculture and Natural Resources Research and Development and the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Office of the Provincial Agriculturists and LGU’s of Aringay, Bacnotan, Bauang, San Juan, San Fernando and Tubao, La Union.

The project was implemented through the formation of mango clusters.There were two mango clusters organized in La Union representing 12 small hold mango growers and two mango contractors/growers. A total of 15 ha mango farm was allotted to the project. The study  aimed to enhance the capability of grower clusters to implement quality guidelines, increase mango production from (5mt/ha to 10mt/ha) and enhance the marketability of quality mango fruits in accordance to GAP and quality guidelines..

Majority of the ICM interventions were adopted either fully or partially by the cluster members. Pruning and thinning of mango trees in farms with too close distance of planting resulted to low population of the major insect pests such as leafhoppers, fruitflies and cecid fly “kurikong”. The adoption of fruit bagging resulted to a reduction on the number of pesticide sprayings from up to seven sprayings to even less than five sprayings.

Generally, an increasing yield trend was observed among the cluster members during the 3 year implementation of the ICM interventions. The average yield of the 1st cluster was 8.44 mt/ha while the average yield of the second cluster was 6.95mt/ha.

The adoption of the different ICM, PQM and GAP also resulted to remarkable net profit, return over expenses (ROE) and percentage of export grade/quality mangoes (42% to 67% Japan grade and 20% to 55% Hongkong Korea grade). At harvest, except for one farm, a low incidence of sooty mold and mango scab was noted. During ripening, stem end rot and anthracnose incidence ranged from 3.33% to 20% and 3.33% to 13.33%, respectively.
