TGP: A strategic option to improve efficiency of small-hold agriculture

In a study  on “Impact Assessment of the Techno Gabay Program of PCARRD in Region 1”conducted by Dr. Marivic Alimbuyugen, director of the Extension Directorate of MMSU, and Mr. Constante Julian, a researcher of MMSU Research Directorate, it was found that the TGP services  contributed to the efficiency of the farmers in their rice production. Particularly, these services include farmers consultation to MS, referrals to FITS staff and the distance of the FITS center  to farmer-clients. It implies that the more consultations and referrals a farmers has to an MS and FITS Staff, and the nearer the FITS center  to the farmer,  the more efficient he is in his farm activities. Findings proved that farmers, after they became TGP clients, had increased their yields due to their higher technical efficiency levels.

The TGP modalities, which include FITS Center, Magsasaka Siyentista, IEC materials, and ICT have significantly influenced the adoption of farmers on rice technologies. The TGP clients were able to realize higher income and in turn, improved their household condition. Additionally, they perceived that the program can be an avenue for them to achieve their aspirations in life.

As a result of this study, it is recommended that  the services of TGP  be intensified and should reach more farmers , as there is  really a need of information and technology services, especially in far flung areas.

Moreover, the FITS centers should be given primodial consideration on its accessibility to market and trading centers and proximity to farming communities. It was found that the nearer the FITS center to the farmers, the more frequent their visits, referrals and acquisition of new information through IEC materials.

With the institutionalization of the TGP, there is a greater chance of achieving improved farm efficiency of small-hold farmers in Region I.

The  data was taken from four FITS Centers which  have been in existence  for the last 5 years or more. There were   120  sample respondents 30 from each FITS center. These  TGP clients have availed  of the  TGP services  in their respective sites.
