Farmer's field day on STBF organic ginger production held
As part of the technology promotion of the Science and Technology-Based Farm project in organic ginger production, a farmer’s field day was conducted last March 5, 2013 at Barangay Saguigui, Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. The activity was initiated through the partnership of Pagudpud FITS Center, MMSU Extension Directorate, and ILARRDEC. It was attended by almost 30 participants composed of local farmers and visitors from various agencies. The activity aimed to showcase the results of the project especially the comparison between the MS practice and the enhanced practice in organic-based ginger production.
The activity started with a field visit and briefing at the demo farm area wherein the two practices (MS and S&T interventions) were compared. Right after the briefing, a short program was conducted led by the extension directorate staff. Highlights of the STBF project were showcased by the Magsasaka Siyentista (MS) Mr. William Castro of FITS Pagudpud together with his technical expert Prof. Maura Luisa Gabriel of MMSU-CAFSD. The results in the project showed that the enhanced practice is more productive and advanced in terms of yield and plant characteristics compared to the MS practice. The variety of ginger used was native for MS practice and Hawaiian/improved native for enhance practice.
After the presentation of results, an open forum for the participants was done. Most of the farmer participants’ concern is the price in marketing ginger. The regional techno-transfer coordinator Mr. Leonardo T. Pascua encouraged the farmers not to stick only in ginger production but try to intercrop other crops for more income. The activity was done successfully and it is expected that the local farmers who attended the field will adopt the new technology presented for them to become a successful farmer entrepreneurs.
