Farmer's field day on glutinous corn production held

As part of the “Science and Technology-Based Farm Project” established at the farm of MS Villamor Tabios in Brgy. Catuguing, San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, a farmer’s field day was conducted last March 4, 2013. The activity highlights the comparison and results of the farmer’s practice and S&T interventions. The field day was spearheaded by the San Nicolas FITS Center, MMSU Extension Directorate, and ILARRDEC. The activity was attended by almost 70 participants composed of local farmers, adopters, members from various organization, Barangay Council, LGU-San Nicolas, and guests from various agencies.

It was started with a field observation and briefing among participants at the demonstration site wherein the MS practice and the enhanced practice was compared. Later on, the opening program was held just in front of the demo farm. Dr. Marivic Alimbuyuguen explained the rationale and objectives of the activity followed by the introduction of guests and participants led by the FITS Manager Ms. Norma Calamayan.

Meanwhile, the S&T Farm highlights were presented by our Magsasaka Siyentista (MS) of the project Mr. Villamor Tabios together with her technical expert from MMSU-CAFSD Prof. Martina F. Tinguil. The highlight shows that the S&T intervention is more progressive in terms of yield, income, and plant characteristics compared to MS practice. The STBF Farm was established last November 22, 2012 with a total area of 2500 m².

An open forum was also done after the highlights presentation wherein the participants/farmers were able to raise their questions and clarifications regarding the results done at the demo farm of the MS. The program ended with the closing remarks of the regional techno-transfer coordinator Mr. Leonardo T. Pascua of ILARRDEC. Mr. Pascua promised during his speech that all the participants who attended the said activity will be given 1 kilo each of the MMSU Glut 1 corn variety used by the MS in the enhanced practice for testing in their own farm. The MMSU Glut 1 variety is produced by the MMSU under the supervision of Prof. Tinguil and it is already a registered seed. By this field day, it is expected that whatever success of the project will be able to adopt by the local farmers especially those corn producers not only in San Nicolas but also in the province.
