San Nicolas Mayor signifies support to corn farmers
“Sa organikong pagsasaka lahat ay panalo”. Panalo ang magsasaka dahil mas mababa ang gastos dahil sa gamit na organikong pataba; Panalo ang ani dahil mas maganda at mas masarap; Panalo sa kalusugan dahil walang halong kemikal; Panalo ang lupa dahil magiging maganda at fertilie ito; at Panalo din ang konsumer dahil insecticide at pesticide free ang mabibili at makakain nila. This was part of the message of the Municipal Mayor of San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte, Honorable Melanie Grace Valdez in her message during the third and last farmers field day on Organic-Based Glutinous Corn Production on March 10, 2013 in the farm of Magsasaka Siyentista Villamor Tabios.
Mayor Valdez relates that she came accross and got interested into organic-based products when her mother was diagnosed with lung cancer in the 80’s. She said that her mother was given only 3 to 4 months to live. What her mother did was to buy and consume organic-based foods and vegetables. The family also planted whetagrass. With this, Mayor Valdez said that the experience served as an eye opener to her on the importance of organic agriculture.
Through the years, organic farming had become more popular and that more and more farmers became interested with it, adds Mayor Valdez. We will continue to support the agriculture sector because farmers are very important to us. Eighty to ninety percent of the municipality are purely agricultural. The vermiculture project in the barangays will be supported. Mayor Valdez also assured the Municipal Agriculture Officer and at the same time FITS Manager in the municipality to support the advocacies of the FITS center.
In addition, Mayor Valdez urged the farmers to level-up. She said that if they plant, they should also consider processing their products to add value to their crops. With value-adding, you will be creating livelihood opportunities for yourself as you will be increasing sources of income for your family. We need to improve and provide additional income for our families, says Mayor Valdez.
Your corn produce is good for chichacorn. While Paoay is producing the famous chichacorn, we can also do it. We have funded the Pasaluboong center which will be established near the municipal hall to showcase the traditional products of San Nicolas. In addition to that, we will be showcasing food products for our tourists to buy, she added.
I thank everyone for the support provided to our farmers. Our friends and partners who are always there to help. We will not succeed without you.
In closing, I encourage our farmers to open your minds and hearts for the various interventions introduced. Your willingness to accept and participate to the various projects will go along way for our success. We should accept these projects for they are blessings to us.
